Track and field teams compete at Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA ­ The Troy State men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in the Alabama Relays this past weekend. There were 63 men’s teams and 56 women’s teams competing for the team titles. On the men’s side Alabama won the team title with 29 points, edging out Auburn with 28 points. Pittsburgh won the women’s title with 50 points while Alabama finished in second with 31 points.

For the Trojans, Michael Green was the top finisher placing third in the 1500m. Green’s time of 3:49.66 was his best performance of the season. Green will be traveling to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend to compete in the Raleigh Relays, where he is looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Green is looking to run under 14 minutes in the 5000m event.

The 4x110m-shuttle hurdle relay team consisting of Joe Gillaspie, Arrington Watkins, Jesse Morrow, and Desmond Newton placed fifth scoring four points for the Trojans.

The women’s 4x800m-relay team consisting of Edna Caraballo, Jennifer Lynch, Natalie Simmons, and Erika Butler shattered a five-year old school record by 10 seconds. The Lady Trojans’ time of 9:42.74 bettered the time of 9:52.98 set by Brook Herman, Tina Beckwith, Jessica Jones and Alexa Holeman.

The Trojans will be in action at the Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida on March 31.
