CHHS, Goshen compete in weight meet

powerlifting teams each participated in the Dothan High School Powerlifting Meet which was held in the Circle City on March 13th.
Ten other high schools from southeast Alabama, northwest Florida and southwest Georgia participated in meet. Schools competed against each in several weight class divisions for points in the overall picture regardless of classification. The competition involved events such as bench, squat and power clean lifts.
Among some of the other schools that was involved in the event included Charles Henderson High School, Carroll-Ozark, Houston County, Chipley, Fla.. Randolph Clay (Ga.), host school Dothan, Northview, Ashford and Daleville.
With lots of inexperienced 8th graders, freshmen and sophomores on this year’s squad following last spring’s 3A state championship, GHS head coach Joe Thornton said this weekend’s meet gave many of his 11 young powerlifters lots of valuable experience.
"You get more experience knowing the strategies of competing in a weight meet," Thornton said. "Most of the young kids that went are great lifters now learned a lot from the meet because some of them had never gone before."
Among the top finisher’s for Goshen included Timmy Mahone finishing first in the 82-to-97 pound weight class, Tyrone Crawford claiming the 148-157 pound division, Quez Burden claiming fourth in the 175-180 pound competition, Cedric claimed second in the super heavy and Terrance Wingard was fourth in the 82-to-97 pound class. Davin Pelton finished fifth in the 98-to-105 pound class.
As far as the performance of the Trojans are concerned, Jarvis Woods won the 158 to 164 pound weight class, while Scott took home first place honors in the 123 to 131 pound class. Chaz Richards finished third in the 220 to 231 pound class. Melvin Scott was also third in the 240-to-257 pound competition.
