Lady Trojans sweep opening day

ATLANTA, Geo. – In a wild doubleheader, the Troy State softball team picked up two wins over Missouri-Kansas City and Campbell in opening day action of the Georgia State Invitational.

The Lady Trojans (12-3) won their first game against Missouri-Kansas City, 7-5. The Kangaroos jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings. The Lady Trojans would rally for the win with three runs in fifth and sixth innings.

Cory Bowen got the win for the Lady Trojans, upping her record to 2-1 on the season. "Our offense really got going late in the game," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis. "Cory pitched really well when we needed her to today. This was good win because we came from behind against a really good team."

In the second game, the Lady Trojans got a preview of its Trans America Athletic Conference rival, Campbell. Troy State took out Campbell, 5-0 to pick up its second win of the day.

Lori Westberg connected on her first home run of the season to put Troy State on top 2-0. That would be all that Kim Unkenholz would need as she shut out Campbell for her third shutout of the season, improving her record to 5-1.

"Kim pitched really well," according Davis. "Lori’s home run was big and that gave us a comfortable lead. It was also good for newcomers to see what it is going to be like when we enter conference play."

The Georgia State Invitational’s second day of tournament play on Saturday. was cancelled due to weather.
