It was a tale of two teams as the Troy State softball team split a doubleheader with Faulkner at the Troy Sportsplex.

Faulkner won game one, 2-1. The Lady Trojans offense sputtered, scratching out just four hits. The defense committed three errors, which allowed both runs to score. In game two, Troy State’s offense came alive, getting 10 hits, which produced eight runs to lead Troy State to 8-5 win.

"We need to become more consistent on offense," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis, whose team is now 10-3 on the season. "We didn’t get the hit we needed in the first game, but came up with clutch hit when we needed it in the second game.

Defensively, we just had some lapses in the field and it cost the first game."

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Bridget McInnes took matters into her own hands, as she hit a home run to right center field to tie the game at one after five innings.

Faulkner would score again in the seventh. Shana Brasher reached on a one-out single to center field. Amy Arnette laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Unkenholz’s throw to first was wide of the bag and rolled past the right fielder, allowing Brasher to score from first and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Trojans couldn’t get a rally started in the seventh, as Totty picked up the win for Faulkner. Unkenholz received her first loss of the season (4-1). She threw seven innings, giving up just four hits and allowing two runs, both unearned, while striking out seven.

Faulkner started the offensive fireworks in game two. Beth Northcutt opened the game with a single and scored on a Cassie Wilkenson wild pitch to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Troy State would battle back to tie the game at one in the second on Sarah Woodside’s home run to left-center field.

But Faulkner would answer back with two in the third. Totty hit a two-run homer to center field putting the Eagles ahead 3-1. The Lady Trojans would put six on the board in the fourth. Troy State was able to load the bases with two outs after cutting the lead to 3-2 on a RBI single by Lauren Pate. Patti Barnett hit a ground ball to third base man April Poe, whose throw was over the head of the first baseman, allowing one run to score, and tying the game at three.

The Lady Trojans got three RBI singles in a row, as Mitchell, Mindy Porep both drove home one run. McInnes stepped up and laced a single through the left side, driving home two runs and giving Troy State a 7-3 lead at the end of fourth.

Troy State would extend their lead to 8-3 on a RBI single by Mitchell. The Lady Trojans would give up two runs in the seventh, but would hold on for the 8-5 win.

Wilkenson (5-1) allowed five runs, all earned, on just seven hits. She struck out one while walking three. Kami Marrott and Mitchell both led the offense going 2-for-3, with Mitchell driving in two runs.

The Lady Trojans are in action again Friday as they participate in the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Geo. The first game is set for 11 a.m. (CST) against Missouri-Kansas City, immediately followed by a game with Campbell.
