Jaguars’ Persons sets record with 40 points

Barbour County 73, Horseshoe Bend 60

Barbour County’s LaKeith Persons dropped 40 points on Horseshoe Bend to help lead the Jaguars to a 73-60 win and advance to the Class 2A boy’s finals of the AHSAA Southeast Regional.

The Jaguars will face Class 2A No. 1 Vincent, who edged the Samson Tigers 59-57 in the earlier 2A semifinal.

The Generals committed 30 fouls to just 13 by the Jaguars, which led to 38 trips to the foul line for Barbour County. The Jaguars converted on 26 of those trips.

Horseshoe Bend led 26-15 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored by the Jaguars in the final three.

The 40 points by Persons is a Class 2A record in the Regional play. He also led the Jaguars with 17 total rebounds. Antonio Thomas and Richard Mitchell had 13 points each for Barbour County behind Persons.

Horseshoe Bend was led by Jay Buchanan with 18 and Jermaine Slaughter with 14.

Vincent 59, Samson 57

In the other Class 2A semifinal, No. 1 Vincent ended Samson’s "Cinderella" season with a 59-57 defeat.

Both teams shot well from the field with Samson shooting 53.5 percent and Vincent shooting 47.2 percent, but Yellowjackets got 11 second chance points to the Tigers’ three.

Kelvin Youngblood led Vincent with 20 points, followed by Edmund Swain with 11 and Robert Peterson with 10.

The Tigers placed two players in double figures. Timmy Bess has 22 and was followed by Jamar Davis’s 12 points.

Barbour County and Vincent face off on Friday at 1:45 p.m. for the Southeast Regional championship.

Lineville (Girls) 53, Geneva County 51

In another close contest, the Lineville girl’s team defeated the Geneva County Lady Bulldogs 53-51 to advance to the Class 2A girl’s final.

Odessa Person led the Lady Aggies with 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Pam Garrett followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as Lineville outscored the Lady Bulldogs 32-20 in the paint.

GCH was led by Mary Neal’s 27 points and Elsie Williams had 11 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Notasulga 59, J.F. Shields 34

Notasulga cruised over J.F. Shields 59-34 in a Class 1A girl’s semifinal game.

Lasheena Fields scored 29 points for the Lady Blue Devils, while teammate Shaquita Fields added 10.

J.F. Shields placed just one player in double figures, that being Adriane Hollinger, who finished with 10.
