Lady Trojans fall again, 63-58

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – The inside-outside attack of Kat Sungy and Shannon Wynn sparked Jacksonville to their sixth straight victory in a 63-58 Trans America Athletic Conference win over Troy State here.

The Lady Trojans (9-10, 5-6 TAAC) held the Dolphins in check in the first half, allowing just 28 points on 11-of-35 shooting and only one three-pointer. But in the second half, Wynn hit three three-pointers on her way to 13 points and Sungy took over inside with a school-record 18 rebounds and 13 points.

The game opened with Troy State falling behind 6-2 on a three-pointer by Lexie Richards with 17:27 left in the first half. But Troy State would rally back to take the lead, going on a 7-0 run to take a 9-7 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the half.

The Dolphins (10-10, 6-5 TAAC) would go on a surge, going on a 7-0 run to take a 26-16 lead with 1:41 left in the half. Troy State’s Jennifer McInnis would take over for the end of the second half, scoring the last 12 points of the half to give Troy State a 28-26 lead at the half.

Troy State would come out and score the first basket of the half, taking a 30-26 lead. But the Dolphins would recover and take tie the game on a two free throws by Richards at 31.

Troy State would go ahead again, 34-33, on three-pointer by Chaquita Alexander. The Dolphins would go on a 5-0 run to take a 38-33 lead on a three-point play by Amber Hallman with 14:17 to go in the game.

The Lady Trojans would come back and cut the lead to two on a three pointer by McInnis with just over 11 minutes left, 41-39. But the Dolphins would go on another streak, outscoring Troy State 8-1, sparked by Wynn’s back-to-back three pointers, to take a 49-40 lead.

Troy State made one last run, cutting the lead to three, 57-54, with just over three minutes left on two Alexander free throws. The Dolphins would hold off any late charge by Troy State hitting 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch to claim the 63-58 win.

Leading Troy State in scoring was McInnis with a game-high 19 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Tomekia Golatte came off the bench with 10 points. Kenya Young added nine points and four rebounds.

Sungy and Wynn both had 13 points. Sungy had 18 rebounds, which ties her own school record. Lana Labura had 11 points and Angela Walker added 10.

The Lady Trojans step outside of conference play with a game against Birmingham-Southern. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
