BRUNDIDGE Members of the Brundidge City Council are hoping matters with Waste Away Group Inc. will soon be solved.

Problems began several years ago when the city entered into an agreement for a waste management company to move into the landfill, but sale of the company wound up in a breach of contract lawsuit because the landfill was never opened. The city of Troy also filed suit.

Tuesday night, the council unanimously gave permission for Mayor Jimmy Ramage and City Administrator Britt Thomas to sign the settlement agreement, which has already been signed by Troy officials.

Terms of the settlement were not discussed since the agreement has not been signed by officials with Waste Away Group Inc.

"Waste Away has not signed it, but we understand, through their attorney, they have agreed to it," Ramage said during the meeting.

He did say the settlement will release the company from further litigation on the landfill matter.

City officials will announce the settlement terms once all signatures are on the agreement.

"Based on what it says, everything should be over and done with in 10 days," Thomas said.

In the meantime, city officials are hoping to make a big announcement by early next week, regarding a company coming into Brundidge.

Ramage said officials with the company have asked that no mention be made publicly until everything is signed.
