Mary Lizzie Carter Messick

Mary Lizzie Carter Messick, 94, of Abbeville died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at her home after an extended illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at Elam Primitive Baptist Church near Goshen with Elder J.P. Morgan and Elder Ross Plowden officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery with Holman-Abbeville Mortuary directing. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Messick was born and raised in the Rodgers Community near Goshen. She had been a resident of Abbeville since 1940. Mrs. Messick attended Troy Normal College (Troy State University), where she received a teaching certificate. She was a former member of the Abbeville Homemakers Club and the Joy Club. She was a member of Elam Primitive Baptist Church.
Mrs. Messick was preceded in death by her husband, Verbia Travis Messick; a son, Jack Messick; father, Cada Sanders Carter; mother, Lucy Louella Kelley Carter; step-mother, Sue Edwards Carter; sister, Lucy Carter; four brothers: Zac Carter, Emmett Carter, Louie Carter and Cada Max Carter.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucy and George Heller of Park Ridge, N.J., Jane and Mack Murphy of Abbeville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wiley S. and Betty Messick of Alpharetta, Ga., O’Neal and Mary Hazel Messick of Bay Minette, Doug and Sarah Messick of Abbeville; brother and sister-in-law, Horace S. and Inez Carter of Athens, Ga.; sister-in-law, Myrtle Carter of New Orleans, La.; several nieces and nephews, including Cada Mills Carter and his wife, Sarah, of Dothan; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
