On a day when Troy State University pitchers required very little offensive help the Trojans got it anyway.
Trojan batters pounded out 10 runs in their 10-1 victory over Faulkner at home Tuesday. Faulkner’s only run came in the top of the second on a solo blast to left to give them a very short lived 1-0 lead.
The Trojans returned the favor with two of their own in the bottom of the second. Derrel Kirkland reached base on an error to start things for the Trojans. Jay Brown walked aboard to give the Trojans two base runners and set the stage for a Brandon Davis two RBI double to put the Trojans up for good 2-1.
The Trojans rolled up another run in the fourth. Kirkland and Brown both walked to give the Trojans two free base runners. Foy Shemwell then bunted to move the runners over and load the bases. The Trojans then received another gift with a rare balked in run making the score now 3-1 in favor of Troy State.
The Trojans netted two more in the fifth with RBI doubles by both Smith and Kirkland to put the Trojans even further ahead 5-1.
The Trojan offense just kept rolling up points in the later innings as well. A four run explosion due to Faulkner errors in the seventh allowed the Trojans to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Troy State capped the scoring with a Jay Brown RBI in the eighth to take the 10-1 win.
Mickey O’Quinn took the victory for the Trojans on the mound pitching four innings with one run on three hits. O’Quinn struck out six while walking none.
The explosive Trojan offense was led by Brandon Davis who was one-for-three with two RBI’s and Derrrell Kirkland, who was one-for-two with an RBI. Casey Smith was also one-for-three for the Trojans with an RBI. The Trojans improved to 10-17 on the year.
