ELBA Tim Ware scored 21 and Monroe Williams added 19 points to help the No.6 Elba Tigers defeat No.10 Goshen 64-52 in Elba Tuesday night. The win improves Elba to 12-2, while Goshen drops to 8-4.
Thanks to turnovers and the Tigers first period shooting woes, Goshen held an eight-point lead at the half. But with Williams and Ware dominating beneath the basket, Elba stormed back in the second, outscoring the Eagles 27-12 in the third quarter alone. Jamar Tucker was the only Eagle player effective during the Tiger run, scoring 10 of Goshen’s 12 points in the third. He finished with a team-high 22 points on the night.
Down 56-46 in in the closing minutes of the fourth, sophomore Averick Rogers nailed two clutch 3-pointers to pull the Eagles within four, but the Tigers finished the game with a flurry of eight straight points.
Tucker and Kendaris Pelton combined for Goshen’s first eight points and the Eagles held Elba without a basket until just five minutes into the game. In the second quarter Pelton, one of Goshen’s top scorers, would put in two more points to help the Eagles to their largest lead of the game at eleven.
But that would be the last basket that the young freshman would score as the Elba defense shut him down for the rest of the night from both inside and out.
The two teams next meet February 4 in Goshen.
Friday night, the Eagles will be at home as they face Class 3A Area 4 rival Luverne. B-team is set to tipoff at 5 p.m. with the varsity teams following.
