A Troy resident was killed and another seriously injured in a traffic accident late Monday night on U.S. Highway 231.

Bradley Austin Ward, 20, was driving a 1995 Nissan pickup truck northbound on Highway 231 when the wreck occurred near Franklin Drive at about 11:30 p.m., according to reports from the Troy Police Department (TPD). Ward was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams.

A passenger in Ward’s truck, Daniel E. Jackson, 21, was seriously injured in the wreck, said Sgt. Benny Scarbrough, TPD public information officer. Jackson was transported to Edge Regional Medical Center by Haynes Ambulance Service and later transferred to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital by helicopter, Scarbrough said.

Jackson was in critical condition at press time, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Also involved in the accident was George Scott Burke Jr. of Lebanon, Va. Burke, who was not hurt, was also traveling northbound on Highway 231 in a 1996 Peterbilt tractor trailer truck, Scarbrough said.

Police officers would not say how the accident occurred because it is still under investigation.
