After months of waiting, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has officially debuted a new driver’s license renewal system that includes online renewals and self-serve kiosks.

Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said throughout the transition process, the department had examined the core functions of each legacy agency and determined the current Driver’s License system was dated and archaic.

“I am pleased to announce a series of technology-based improvements, which will result in more efficient service and shorter wait times for citizens of Alabama,” he said.

While the online renewals of driver’s licenses will give customers the opportunity to renew licenses or order duplicates whenever is most convenient to them, the online scheduling opportunity will allow customers to select an appointment time that suits their schedules to make a visit to one of ALEA’s Driver License Examining Offices.

Customers choosing to the use digital licensing for their smart phone will be able to download a copy of their online-renewed license to Apple Passbook or Google wallet to show as a secure form of identification.

Pike County Probate Judge Wes Allen said his office was excited that online renewals were available to the public.

“Secretary Collier and his team at ALEA are working really hard to give taxpayers more options for renewing their Driver’s Licenses and ID,” Allen said. “I am excited this is available to the public. I highly recommend that the public try the online Driver’s License renewal option.”

Anyone renewing their licenses online will be required to pay a service fee of $2.75, in addition to the $36.25 driver license fee.

Other online services include boat registration renewal, ordering of crash reports and employment background checks for companies.

Self-serve renewal kiosks are available in driver license offices in Mobile, Dothan, Montgomery, Opelika, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Decatur and Huntsville.
