A hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope. From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community. National Hospital Week celebrates hospitals and the men and women who support the health of their communities through dedication and compassionate care. It also recognizes the miracles they help to make happen on a day to day basis, both large and small.

The event theme is the centerpiece of a promotional campaign aimed at uniting health care facilities across the country during the May 10–16 celebration. “National Hospital Week, first and foremost, is a celebration of people,” Teresa Grimes, Troy Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer, said. “We’re extremely proud of each member of our staff and we recognize the important role they play in extending a sense of trust to our patients and our communities.”

The nation’s largest health care event, National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals. The celebration, launched in Chicago, succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among members of the public and eventually spread to facilities across the country.

A full slate of activities has been enjoyed by the employees of Troy Regional Medical Center. The theme for the week was game shows. Monday kicked off the week with “Cash Cart.” The employees enjoyed golf cart rides while answering questions about quality and patient care. Tuesday was a breakfast with “Name That Tune” complete with musical instruments and prizes for the winners. Wednesday goodie carts delivered treats while employees were asked if “The Price Is Right.” Thursday was “Let’s make a Deal” where everyone enjoyed packing their pockets with everything that would fit and playing the game for prizes.

Friday will be a picnic style lunch for all the employees. The theme will be “Wheel of Fortune.”

“The week is planned for the fun of every member of the TRMC team both day and evening shifts,” Grimes pointed out. “It is a week of fun activities that everyone enjoys. We look forward to this week each year.”

“Please take this year’s National Hospital Week as an opportunity to thank all of the dedicated individuals – physicians, nurses, therapists, engineers, food service workers, volunteers, administrators and so many more – for their contributions. It takes each of them to make the successful team that is TRMC,” Grimes added.
