Once again, the spotlight is on summer at Troy University.
For the sixth year, the Department of Theater and Dance will offer Summer Spotlight camps for ages four through high school and incoming freshmen.
Tori Lee Averett, Summer Spotlight director, said participation in the Summer Spotlight camps has increased every year.
“This year we have expanded the camps to accommodate the growing interest,” Averett said. “We are offering an early bird discount of $25 on registration fees paid by June 1.”
Averett said the Summer Spotlight camps include teaching artists from the Troy University schools of music, dance and theatre as well as guest teaching artists.
“One theater artist from New York City has just come off tour,” Averett said. “Another guest artist is a Washington D.C. based actor who is up and coming.  We’ll also have a Texas-based dancer and choreographer. The camps will feature six guest artists in the Performance Intensive, four in the Drama Camp and two in Spotlight on Dance Camp. The instruction will be outstanding throughout Summer Spotlight.”
The Spotlight on Dance Camp for ages 8-12 will be the week of July 7-11.
“No dance experience is required for this camp,” Averett said. “The campers will explore the world of movement. This camp has been so popular that we have extended it from a half-day camp to a full-day camp.”
Spotlight on Dance will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will feature a showcase on the last day of the camp.
The registration fee is $200 or $175 by June 1 and includes daily snacks, full lunches at Trojan Dining and campus shuttles. Campers also receive a camp T-shirt.
“Space for this camp is limited to 25 and it always fills up,” Averett said.
The Creative Drama Camp for ages 4-13 will be the week of July 13-18 and will include creative movement, storytelling, creative drama and arts and crafts. For the older campers, the camp will also include coaching in playwriting, acting and musical theater.
“The Creative Drama Camp will culminate with a showcase that includes a Disney musical adapted for kids,” Averett said. “We are extremely excited about the opportunity to present a Disney musical.”
The Creative Drama Camp will be a half-day camp for ages four and five and will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at noon.
Camp for the older ages will be divided into three age divisions, 6 and 7, 8-10 and 11-13.
The fee for the full-day camp is $200 or $175 by June 1 and, for the half-day camp, $125 or $100 by June 1. There is a sibling discount of $50 for each sibling after the first camper. The fee will include snacks, lunch at Trojan Dining, supplies and shuttle on campus.
The Performance Intensive and Technical Theater Intensive camps will be July 20-26.
“The Intensives are strongly encouraged for serious theater students,” Averett said.
Participants may choose to live in Troy University housing under supervision or to commute.
The Performance Intensive provides instruction in all phases of performance – auditions, acting, scene study, vocal technique, musical theater, voice, movement, dance, directing and playwriting.
The Technical Theater Intensive is directed toward teaching theater students to develop their potential in classes and production related to sound, lighting, stage management, scenery and properties.
The on-campus resident fee is $350 and the commuter fee with meal ticket is $300. The fees will be discounted $25 if reservations are made by June 1.
Registration may be made online at www.troytheatre.org or on Facebook by searching for Summer Spotlight at TROY.
Registration for all Summer Spotlight camps closes on July 1.
