Oneonta, CHHS to write another chapter of rivalry Saturday

Even though Charles Henderson High School and Oneonta are separated by over 175 miles, the two 4A schools are very knowledgeable of one another.

The Trojans and Redskins met in the football championship game in December, and in the state basketball final four in Birmingham in February.

In each instance, Oneonta was the team celebrating when the clock hit zero.

The Charles Henderson baseball team is looking to change the school’s fortune on Saturday. The Trojans will play the No. 2 ranked Redskins in the back end of a split doubleheader at Northview High School in Dothan.

Derek Irons, head coach of the top-ranked Trojans, couldn’t help but smile when discussing the weekend showdown.

“I know that our guys that weren’t playing football went to the title game, and most of team went to the girls basketball game as well,” said Irons. “Our football guys have had this one is circled for a while. We have a little bit of a history, and I’m sure this weekend will be fun.”

Oneonta has been nipping at the heels of the Trojans all season long. In every Alabama Sports Writer’s poll of the 2014 season, Charles Henderson has been ranked No. 1 and Oneonta the runner-up. The Redskins are 24-4 on the season, while the Trojans have a record of 26-8.

In the first game of the day, Charles Henderson will see 6A Northview. The Trojans and Cougars played an extremely tense, close game in the finals of the Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament in March. Northview escaped Riddle-Pace Field with a 2-0 win.

Irons likes playing two marquee opponents on the weekend prior to the playoffs beginning.

“Both team that we will see on Saturday will help us prepare for next Friday when we open the playoffs,” said Irons. “We will all so different ways next week with Northview in 6A, Oneonta in 4A north and us in 4A south. This weekend will give each team a chance to feel that playoff atmosphere a weekend early.”

The doubleheader gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Northview in Dothan.

The Trojans and Cougars will open the action, while Charles Henderson and Oneonta are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
