CHMS downs Providence in home finale

The smile on Charles Henderson Middle School coach Michael King’s face told the story.

After a season full of ups and downs, his team was finally able to celebrate a pair of wins. The Trojans knocked off Providence Christian 10-0 and 3-1 in a double header at Frazier Field Thursday night.

The Trojans used bunts and hit and run plays to near perfection in the first game.

Charles Henderson scored six runs, with three coming on bunts, in the third inning to break open a close game.

“We aren’t the type of team that is going to hit it all over the field,” said King. “I told them that small ball was going to do it for us today, and it did. They bought in to it, and it worked.”

Jack Witherington led the Trojans at the plate in the first game, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Brock Huner got the win on the mound in game one, giving up just three hits.

In game two, the Trojans once again used small ball to plate two runs in the bottom of the first inning and a big insurance run in the third.

Trot Sikes put down a late Providence rally attempt with a chopper back to the mound with the bases loaded in the fourth.

King praised his team for the effort they showed in the double header, and for the entire season.

“At this level it is all about teaching them the style and system we want to use at Charles Henderson,” said King. “They have already bought in to it, and are ready to play. When Coach Irons gets them in a few years, he will get some very good ball players.”
