The next 13-week session of DivorceCare, a divorce recovery support group, will begin Sept. 4 at Southside Baptist Church.

Denise Adams, who leads the group with her husband, David D. Adams, said that most people will say that separation and divorce are the most painful and stressful experiences they’ve ever faced.

“It’s a confusing time and a time when you feel isolated and have a lot of questions about issues you’ve never faced before,” Adams said. “DivorceCare helps those who are going through a separation or divorce face the issues and challenges and rebuild their lives.”

DivorceCare has a Christian based emphasis but is non-denominational.

Adams said each weekly session has two elements.

“During the first part of the session, the group watches a video that features expert interviews and real-life studies,” she said. “Then, we spend time discussing the video and what’s going on in the lives of the participants. Everything is confidential. Nothing that is discussed in the group session leaves there. That is a commitment that all participants make. DivorceCare is a place where people can go to find help and healing for the hurt of separation and divorce.”

Although DivorceCare is a 13-week course, Adams said each week a different topic is discussed so admission is continually open.

“People can come at anytime during the 13 weeks,” she said. “There is something of value offered at every session. Some people have come back and attended a topic or topics a second time. DivorceCare in ongoing. We take a short break between sessions and begin another 13-week session.”

The topics included in each session are anger, depression, loneliness, financial survival, new relationships, child care, forgiveness, reconciliation and growing closer to God.

There is a $20 fee for DivorceCare. The fee includes a workbook, which Adams said is most beneficial for “now and later.”

The fee also includes snacks, which are served at each weekly session.

The sessions are from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights.

“Activities are available for children during that time,” Adams said. “Children can participate in choir as well as Royal Ambassadors and Girls in Action youth activities.”
