“The Marvelous Wonderettes” will take the stage at 7 o’clock tonight at the Claudia Crosby Theater on the campus of Troy University.

For many, it has been a long wait for this Off-Broadway hit to come to town.

“‘The Marvelous Wonderettes’ features pop tunes of the 1950s and 1960s,” said Dr. John Jinright, presenter chair of the co-sponsoring Troy Arts Council. “The Wonderettes’ show is a funny, glittery, song and dance review that features a trunk-full of pop classics.”

Jinright said the Wonderettes’ lineup of songs reads like the top pop tunes from the ’50s and ’60s: “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick On Your Collar,” “Mr. Lee,” “It’s My Party,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Leader of the Pack,” “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.,” “Rescue Me,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and twenty other hits.

Dr. William Denison, TAC president, said those who are middle-aged and older will remember most of the songs that “The Marvelous Wonderettes” will bring to life.

“But people of all ages will enjoy this show, which also features a live on-stage combo.”

Even though much of the show is music, Denison said there is also an entertaining storyline.

“The show begins when the girls, the Wonderettes, perform a show for their classmates at Springfield High School in 1958,” he said.

While the “Wonderettes” are good friends, a competitive theme emerges when all four girls are announced as candidates for prom queen.

Denison said his understanding is that, at the end of act one, the audience will vote and elect the winner.

Act two fast-forwards to 1968 where the Wonderettes gather for a class reunion.

They are older, wiser and a little bruised by the upheavals of the Rock Revolution.

But it’s all in fun as the girls pursue dreams that are as big as their crinoline petticoats.

“Everyone will enjoy this show from The Springer Theater,” Denison said. “The Troy Arts Council has not sponsored a theater production in a while and it will be a good way to cap off the season.”

The Troy University College of Communication and Fine Arts is the co-sponsor of “The Marvelous Wonderettes.”

Tickets for tonight’s performance of “The Marvelous Wonderettes” are $20 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the door.
