The Charles Henderson High School boy’s basketball team didn’t waste any time in taking care of Ashford in the opening round of the AHSAA Class 4A Area 3 tournament at Wagoner Hall on Friday.

The Trojans romped Ashford 62-32 behind Tyler Mitchell’s 19 points.

Charles Henderson scampered out to a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Joshua Noel was on fire early for the Trojans as he scored eight of his 12 points in the first frame.

The pace of play slowed a little in the second quarter but Reilly Fox drilled a long-range three-pointer to build the Trojans advantage to 29-14. Fox would strike again with a 15-footer after a CHHS steal. Charles Henderson led at halftime 31-18.

Ashford would apply constant pressure in the second half, but Charles Henderson’s athleticism would be too much for the Hornets. The Trojans would outscore Ashford 31-14 in the final two quarters.

Jhakendal Johnson would finish the game with 11 points for the Trojans. He knocked down two of his three 3-point shots in the game.

The Trojans will face Bullock County in the championship game on Monday at 7 p.m.

Both Charles Henderson and Bullock County will advance to the South Sub-Regional in Dothan on Feb. 15.

Game times have not been set.
