One man is in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds as police search for two attempted murder suspects.

A 23-year-old Troy University student and his 26-year-old cousin who was visiting him left an apartment in the 500 block of Gibbs Street for a short time Tuesday night. They returned to the apartment about 10:30 to find two black males who were armed inside the residence.

The intruders and cousins got into a physical altercation, according to police, and the 26-year-old was shot twice – once in the jaw and once in the lower abdomen.

Police report the intruders ran from the apartment and into a residential area. They were dressed in all black and were wearing black ski masks. One suspect is about 6-foot tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He has black hair and a dark complexion. The second suspect is about 5-foot, 9 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds. He also has black hair and a dark complexion.

“They ran toward a residential area from Gibbs Street, so if anyone saw two black males who were dressed all in black and were running through the area about 10:30 [Tuesday] night, we need you to call us,” said Troy Police Sgt. Benny Scarbrough.

Police officers did recover one handgun from the scene, along with other evidence that Scarbrough said he couldn’t discuss because the investigation is ongoing.

The shooting victim was airlifted from Troy Regional Medical Center to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, but was expected to live, Scarbrough said. The university student was uninjured.
