The Troy 6U Sweetees traveled to Montgomery and went undefeated to win a 6U Dixie Youth Softball State Championship to earn a spot in the World Series later this month.
The Troy Sweetees finished runner-up in the district tournament last month, losing two games to Dothan, but bounced back to sweep their way to a state championship this time around.
“I think we played like a completely different team than in district,” 6U Coach Tyson Pugh said. “I was extremely proud of the way we came out and played. Leading up to the tournament we focused a lot on hitting and I think that paid off.”
After losing twice to Dothan in the district tournament, the Troy 6U All-Stars came back to beat them 26-12 in the state tournament before capturing the state championship with a 27-23 win over Montgomery American.
“As a coach, when you get beat by a team twice you really don’t want to play them again,” Pugh continued. “I feel like they weren’t intimidated at all, though, and they hit the ball all over the place. I’m really proud of these girls.”
The Troy Sweetees are made up of Ramsey Coley, Lennon Henderson, Ellis Ann Farrar, Nora Pugh, Charlotte Wingard, Kate Brown, Emma Arcemont, Mary Raegan Beasley, Harper Mitchell, Brianna McQueen, Emerie Pigott and Blakely Murphy. The coaches are Jeremy Henderson, Tyson Pugh, Blake Coley and Ian Arcemont.
The Troy Sweetees will head to Ruston, La., July 26 to begin play in the 6U Softball World Series.
“I just want to see us continue to have success at the plate,” Pugh said. “Just continue to hit the ball, play hard and build on what we’ve been able to accomplish so far.”
