Brundidge artist Rebekah Alexander is an art lifeline and connector in the Pike County community.
Alexander is the president of the Pike County Art Guild, Community Engagement Liaison for the Johnson Center for the Arts and she teaches various classes around the area. She is also a member of the Brundidge Historical Society and the Troy Arts Council Auxiliary.
Alexander attended the University of North Georgia where she received an Associate of Art in studio art. Alexander says she has always been drawn to art and the history of it which is why she chose to pursue an art degree.
Alexander shared what art means to her and how it plays into her life.
“I think art’s medicine, it’s been my navigation for everything.” she said. “Art itself has always been prevalent and so I think it’s a survival mechanism for myself.”
While Alexander claims painting as her bread and butter, she also enjoys mixed media art.
“So anything like junk journaling. I have notebooks, anything paper, fabric, glitter, any other things.” she said. “It’s just like throwing stuff in a book, so I love a collage.”
Alexander teaches various art workshops and classes in the community. Some of the classes that she facilitates are Summer Art Explosion, Sunshine Art for Seniors at Troy Regional Medical Center, Art Expression Session at Charles Henderson Child Health Center, art at the Boys and Girls Club and classes at Sprout Early Learning Center.
Alexander also hosts various other workshops through the Johnson Center such as Art by the Tracks and Date to Create and ArtSPARK through the International Arts Center at Troy University.
“I couldn’t have dreamed of doing all the things that I’m doing now,” she said. “It has been very humbling and incredible.”
“The people that I get to meet and witness their stories through art is just amazing, it really is,” she said. “I just found myself naturally.”
Alexander also shared what it means to her to share art with the community.
“I’m inspired to share my art with the community because I know that art as a modality is a healing one,” she said. “The act of witnessing art or creating art either one is healing and it feels good, it’s fun.”
“I also think that by sharing a piece of my truth with others, maybe they can recognize that in themselves,” she said.
Alexander hopes that she can inspire others through her art experiences.
“If folks would take anything away from art experiences, I would hope it would be that they are the masterpiece,” she said.
Alexander shared her message for those who take part in anything art related.
“Whether you’re viewing art or doing art, just keep doing that,” she said. “It’s important.”
