Commission makes board appointments

The Pike County Commission dealt with a light agenda at its Monday night meeting.

The commission held a public hearing to address any concerns about the application of a Community Development Block Grant to be used for a multi-road paving project. There was no public comment at the hearing and the commission will move forward with the grant application.

County Engineer Derick Donaldson also requested the commission hire two full-time employees for mowing. Donaldson said he had talked to contractors and it would be less expensive to hire employees and do the work in-house than to contract out the services.

Donaldson said he would have to pull people from other tasks to form a full work crew during the summer months. But, he said the hire of two additional employees would give him a net increase in man hours for the other nine months of the year.

Donaldson submitted several options in his request for the commissioners to review.

The Commission also appointed James Meadows and Monty Carter to the Pike County Department of Human Resources Board.

County Administrator McKenzie Wilson said some changes were made at the state level for the Alabama Sales and Use Tax Exemption Act and the commission would no longer need to approve new resolutions for the Back to School and Severe Weather Awareness Sales Tax Holidays. The commission previously passed resolutions stating Pike County would participate in the sales tax holidays annually.

The commission approved contracting with American Marketing and Publishing for its $595 essential virtual tour package for the courthouse that included 360-degree indoor and outdoor photography as well as 10 still images. She recommended a $895 comprehensive package for the judicial complex. That package included more 360-degree photography of the interior of the building as well as 20 still images. The 360-degree photography is used to generate the virtual tours. Both packages would be used to create virtual tours on Google Maps.
