- Wayne Slaughter, left, and Travis Jacques, with the Pike County Road Department oversaw the installation of two LED stop signs at the intersection of the CSX railroad and Tennille Road (CR 4430). Jacques said there had been three accidents at the crossing in the past two years. He said the stop signs and additional work and signage at the intersection would hopefully make it safer.
Stop signs have been placed on Pike County Road 4430, the Tennille Road, at the intersection with the CSX rail crossing.
Pike County Engineer Derick Donaldson said there have been several accidents over the past few years where a vehicle was struck by a train. Donaldson said there are two curves leading into the intersection, which leads to reduced visibility for drivers approaching the intersection.
“I’m not sure if the accidents are due to speed or another factor, but we wanted to add another layer of protection,” Donaldson said. “No one has been killed as far as I know. But, it has become a concern. We did an engineering review and looked at options for improving the crossing.”
Donaldson said the decision was made to change the traffic pattern at the rail crossing. He said previously, there were yield signs at the crossing. He said those signs have been replaced by LED stop signs. He said vehicles will be required to come to a complete stop at the intersection and the flashing LED lights will help attract the driver’s attention.
The LED stop signs are solar powered and are able to run continuously. Donaldson said because the traffic pattern was changed, warning signs had been painted on the road alerting drivers that there was a stop sign ahead. Additional temporary signage will also alert drivers to the changes at the intersection.
Donaldson said the Road Department had previously placed rumble strips leading up to the intersection. He said those rumble strips had been improved as an additional layer of protection at the intersection.
