On Monday, June 23, Troy Police Chief Danny Barron officially promoted officer Devin Pittman to the rank of Sergeant of the Patrol Division of the Troy Police Department.

Pittman is a Phenix City native who played football and wrestled at Central High School before beginning his law enforcement career in the military as a military police officer with the U.S. Army National Guard. He went on to serve as a correctional officer in Georgia with the Columbus Consolidated Government.

“I grew up in a bad neighborhood, around a lot of drug related activity,” Pittman said of his desire to become a police officer. “So, it drove me towards the narcotics side of policing. Eventually, I got under Lt. (Jason) Barron here and he drove me towards the supervision side of things.”

Pittman’s older brother, Dakota Pittman, joined the Troy Police Department a few years prior to Devin Pittman.

“I remember seeing him at his brother’s graduation and he told me that one day he would be applying with us,” Troy Police Chief Danny Barron said. “He wanted to be a police officer here in Troy and he made good on that promise and since he’s been here, he’s done a really good job for us.”
Pittman attended Troy University with a focus in criminal justice and joined TPD in 2021 as a patrol officer. He said that his brother had a big impact on him coming to Troy.

“He was down here at least two years before I came on and he wanted me to get out of working in the prison system and get out on the streets where you can make a difference,” he said. “He had a major impact on me being here.”

Pittman was certified in 2024 as a Field Training Officer and joined TPD’s Emergency Response Team, the equivalent to SWAT. He was certified as a Basic Tactical Operator this year, as well.

“Everything he does, and has done, here has been really great,” Barron said of Pittman. “I couldn’t ask for a better officer. I’m excited he’s going to be a sergeant here with us and I think he will continue to excel and continue to do well.”

Troy Mayor Jason Reeves was also on hand during Pittman’s promotion.

“Thank you for being willing to serve and thank you for being willing to step up into a leadership role,” Reeves told Pittman. “Leadership is hard and it’s about service; service to your community and to your fellow officers. I’m just very proud and appreciative of you. We’ll do everything we can to support you and just always remember there are a lot of people around here working with you and want to help you.”

Pittman, who was pinned at the ceremony by his children Jayce, Zuri and Koa, has set some big goals for himself.

“Climbing the ranks of leadership feels great,” he said. “I know this is the start of a journey for me and I plan to improve all the way up to chief one day, if I’m able. It’s a great feeling and I have some great leadership in front of me that has led me here. I just want to thank the whole department and the City of Troy for believing in me.”
