The Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Brundidge was held on the grounds of the Historic Bass House in downtown Brundidge on Saturday.

Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday’s name, first used in the 1890s, is a combination of the words June and nineteenth, referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.[

Isabell Boyd, of the Juneteenth Celebration committee, said the activities featured music by local singers, groups and musicians. The featured speakers included local ministers and community representatives.

The annual Juneteenth Celebration is a national holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Boyd said Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when then-President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
Now, many people have the day off from work on Juneteenth. The holiday is celebrated throughout the country with parades and family and community events.
