The 2026 Distinguished Young Women of Pike County honored three outstanding rising seniors at the Claudia Crosby Theatre on the campus of Troy University this past weekend.
Though participation was smaller this year, the program’s spirit and mission remained strong.
“It is a program that empowers the young women of Pike County,” said program co-chair Joanna Ames.
The DYW (Distinguished Young Women) program is designed for rising high school seniors to take part in each year, empowering them to reach their full potential through education, personal development and a celebratory showcase of their achievements with scholarships.
This year’s participants were Olivia Schwarte of Pike Liberal Arts School, Carmen Sanders of Ariton High School and Vivian Holland of Pike County High School. After a week of rehearsals, each young woman took the stage to compete in areas such as interview, talent, self-expression, fitness and scholastics.
Olivia Schwarte was named the 2026 Pike County Distinguished Young Woman. She received a $750 cash scholarship, a $3,500 Troy University scholarship and a 20-class package from Neighborhood Barre. Olivia also won category awards in Interview, Self-Expression, Scholastic and Spirit of DYW.
“I was just thrilled and excited,” Olivia said of the moment her name was called as the overall winner. “I was thinking about the next steps ahead, including the state journey—and it was really special to have my big sister, Joy Schwarte, last year’s winner, put the medal around my neck.”
Schwarte noted that this competition helped her grow personally.
“It helped me come out of my shell,” she said. “I’ve gained a sense of bravery I never thought I had.”
Carmen Sanders was named First Runner-Up and awarded a $550 scholarship. She won in the talent and fitness categories, along with the Be Your Best Self essay award. Vivian Holland earned the title of Second Runner-Up and received a $350 scholarship.
The program is entirely volunteer-run, with scholarships funded through the support of local businesses and residents of Pike County. This includes sponsorships from Platinum Sponsors such as Spurlock Iron and Metal Company, South Alabama Rural Health Associates and Troy Bank and Trust. Silver Sponsors included Wes and Cae Allen, Douglas Brothers Jewelers and Jones Medical Supply. The Hoffman Education Center for the Family served as the Bronze Sponsor.
Each year, DYW sets out to life Pike County’s young women—encouraging them to step forward, lead, and grow.
