Troy University is now offering classes on-site for Airmen at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina, as part of a new educational partnership.
The agreement, signed last fall, paved the way for Troy University to begin teaching classes on base in January. The partnership was formally celebrated on Tuesday, June 17, with a signing ceremony at Shaw, featuring officials from both Troy University and the base leadership.
“At Troy University, we take great pride in our service to America’s military men and women and their families,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. “Because of our long history of military support, Troy University understands the unique needs of military students, and we remain committed to helping them succeed in their educational and career pursuits. We look forward to working with the leadership at Shaw to provide convenient access to Troy University degree programs right here on base.”
Through the new program, Troy University will offer a variety of in-person classes at Shaw, including courses in communications, English, psychology, and leadership. Students enrolled at Shaw can also access Troy University’s full slate of online courses while benefiting from on-site support and resources provided by University faculty and staff.
“Shaw Air Force Base is pleased to partner with Troy University to increase access to educational opportunities for our Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Chandrika Brewton, 20th Force Support Squadron Director of Operations. “The U.S. Air Force actively encourages the pursuit of higher education. Having in-person classes and instruction on base provides flexibility and greater choice for our members.”
Troy University has been nationally recognized for its commitment to military service, including being named a 2024–2025 Military Friendly® School by G.I. Jobs magazine.
“Troy University’s support of the U.S. military is a vital part of our institutional identity,” said Sohail Agboatwala, Senior Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Administration. “For more than 70 years, we have led the way in military outreach, and we’re proud to continue that tradition through this partnership.”
Troy University began serving military students in 1951 at what was then Camp Rucker. In 1965, the University established a teaching center at Maxwell Air Force Base, and in 1974 began offering classes in Europe through a contract with the U.S. Air Force. Today, nearly 30 percent of TROY students have military ties, and the Troy for Troops Center provides dedicated support and services to these students.
