Eight people have filed qualifying paperwork for the Brundidge Municipal Election.
Due to a change in election laws in Alabama, candidates must be cleared by the Alabama Ethics Commission before they can become a qualified candidate.
Brundidge City Clerk Linda Faust said anyone wishing to qualify for municipal elections must fill out their candidate application and pay the $50 application fee at Brundidge City Hall. Once they have filed paperwork with the city, the candidate must file a Statement of Economic Interest (SEI) with the Alabama Ethics Commission within five days of filing an application to run for office. The ethics commission then has five days to rule on the candidate’s SEI.
After being approved by the ethics commission, the candidate is qualified to run in the municipal election.
Faust said qualifying for municipal elections began on June 9 and will end at 5 p.m. on June 20. Faust said because of the new law, it could take until July 4 for all candidates to qualify.
Faust said because of the new law, she was recommending that all applicants file their SEI the same day as they fill out their applications for the municipal election at Brundidge City Hall.
Faust said Eric T. Spitzer, incumbent Isabell Boyd and Anthony Foster had applied to run for mayor. No one yet filed an application for District 1 councilmember. James Rode and Alexandria Griffin applied to run for District 2. Margaret Ross applied to run for District 3. Byron Gaynor applied to run for District 4, and Ira Lampley and Marilyn Rodgers applied to run for District 5.
Faust said candidates are not officially qualified to run for mayor or council until their SEI is approved by the Alabama Ethics Commission.
Faust said she expected more people to submit applications in the next week.
