- Tupper Lightfoot
Perhaps, some might say Father’s Day is an odd time to remember and honor Mister Tupper Lightfoot.
He was not a father in the strictest sense. But he loved his hometown of Brundidge and cared deeply for its people and his generosity was unequalled.
Tupper Lightfoot’s well-known legacy is the positive difference he made in the lives of many more young people than is known and will ever be known. He made it financially possible for countless Brundidge area young people to attend college or trade school or to get started on the career they imagined.
Maybe, Tupper Lightfoot had no children but he had a father’s caring heart for people in his hometown and anywhere else he knew of a need, said Jimmy Ramage longtime Brundidge mayor who knew and greatly respected “Mister Tupper” who gave and gave until he had no more to give. “He died penniless … for the love of others.”
Ramage said Tupper Lightfoot’s generosity was known, not only to those who were recipients of his giving spirit, but by the way he lived his life.
“I can think of no greater recognition of Mister Tupper’s giving and caring spirit than having the Brundidge public library housed in his lifelong home.”
Lawrence Bowden, laughingly, said he is blessed to be old enough to remember Tupper Lightfoot.
“There aren’t many of us around that can still remember Tupper Lightfoot and to be witness to his Godly spirit,” Bowden said. “That Tupper Lightfoot helped people was an understatement. There was, and is, no way to know how many lives were made better by his loving spirit and helping hand.
“Tupper was the caretaker for our town, there’s no better way to say it.”
Tupper Lightfoot was a lifelong member of Brundidge Methodist Church and served his Lord through the church in many ways known and many ways unknown.
Ramage and Bowden were in agreement that Tupper Lightfoot was a Godly man, who put others before himself, always.
“What more can be said about one of God’s servants?”
The Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Historic Places.
