To keep young minds active, engaged, and growing over the summer months, Common Ground Troy has officially kicked off its summer program for middle school boys within the Troy City Schools district.
The goal of this summer program is to prevent academic learning loss and foster personal development through hands-on experiences and mentorship.
Backed by funding from the Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) Grant, an Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Grant from the Alabama Department of Education and Lurleen B. Wallace Community College (LBW), the program began this week with math-based STEM activities led and sponsored by LBW.
“Today was the kickoff, and today they are doing math activities,” said Executive Director of Common Ground, Clint Free. “LBW is hosting several activities this summer, and we are excited for what is ahead.”
In total, there are 40 boys in grades sixth through eighth that are participating in this year’s program. Over the coming weeks, they will have enrichment opportunities, from welding and construction to financial literacy, forestry and even field trips to places like Camp Butter and Egg.
Each summer day across the next eight weeks will consist of academics, including the subjects of math, reading and STEM in the morning, while the afternoons are geared toward recreation and creative outlets. Art projects are also on the horizon, ensuring that students get a well-rounded experience.
“We try to provide an environment where they can all learn in different ways,” said Free. “We ask the boys what they want to explore and try to give them experiences they do not always get in the classroom.”
Common Ground Troy emphasizes individual growth through a motto called the “Three E’s,” which refers to the words encourage, equip, and enrich.
“We encourage them to be better and to grow. We equip them with the tools they need and we enrich their lives with opportunities that help them reach their full potential,” Free added.
The summer program is free for families and reflects Common Ground Troy’s continued commitment to nurturing youth development and community connection.
