Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library hosted their first community program of the summer on June 5 as part of their summer reading program.

The program, Nature on Wheels, is an educational program led by the Alabama Nature Center. The purpose of this program is to educate the community on Alabama’s biodiversity and natural History.

Tammy Smith, a naturalist at the Alabama Nature Center, shared her thoughts on the importance of this program for children.

“It’s important to know the world around you,” she said. “To know how it works, to know how things in it work and how they relate to each other, so that they can make informed, appropriate decisions.”

Part of the program’s presentation is showing live animals to children to help them learn and understand more about them in a safe, hands-on way. Some of the animals presented were turtles, snakes and a baby alligator.

“It’s so fun to share the animals and the kids love it, everybody’s curious,” said Smith.

Students that attended the event shared what they learned and what their favorite part of the program was.

“I learned a lot about how animals live in the wild compared to how they live in captivity,” said David Wilson, 8. “I really enjoyed the alligator too.”

“(My favorite part was) to touch the animals and see different species,” said Grayson Fanil, 11.

Tupper Lightfoot will hold five more community programs throughout the summer. Each of these programs are free and educational for students of all ages.

Of these programs, two, Snapology on June 26 and 4-H Fun and Art on July 10, will require special registration. Snapology is a program built to teach science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) in a fun and engaging way. To register for these programs, call the library at 334-735-2145.
