The City of Troy’s annual Summer Feeding Program will begin feeding area children on Monday, June 3.
The Summer Feeding Program will begin on June 3 and continue through July 4, serving lunches to children at seven different locations in Troy. The locations for lunch pickups include Saint Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Share My World 1 and 2, The Christian Love Center, Lily Missionary Baptist Church, Charles Henderson Middle School and Troy Elementary School.
“It’s a wonderful thing, I just wish we could have more sites,” Summer Feeding Program Coordinator Jann Baxter Lee said. “This year, we’re only serving through July because it has become so expensive with purchasing the food. Troy City Schools makes the lunches for us. To keep the cost down we have to limit it to doing it until July.”
Lee, who has also been a teacher for three decades, said being able to feed the children of Troy through this program has meant a lot to her and to others.
“For a lot of kids their school lunch is very important,” she said. “For them to at least have some sort of lunch that is wholesome and nutritious during the summer time is really important. I wish we would serve longer but the little time we are able to serve our kids in Troy means a lot to me and I think it’s a very important service.”
Lunch is available for any child from Troy that comes to a site to get lunch. Lee said that all site supervisors know that any child that comes off the street can be served a nutritious lunch.
