Troy eliminated from Sun Belt Tournament

The Troy Trojans (39-21) fell by a score of 2-1 to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by a score of 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament in Montgomery on Saturday, eliminating the Trojans.
After losing to Old Dominion in the first game of the double-elimination tournament, Troy bounced back to beat Texas State on Thursday. On Friday, Troy rematched Old Dominion in an elimination game and stayed alive with a dominant 9-4 win. Mike Bello went 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs, two stolen bases and a run, while Gavin Schrader went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run. Steven Meier hit a home run and Jakob Wax scored two runs.
Grayson Stewart (6-2) got the win on the mound, striking out seven batters and giving up nine hits and two earned runs in seven innings pitched. Colby Frieda pitched two innings and fanned a pair of batters along with giving up two hits and two earned runs. Blake Cavill tallied eight putouts and two double plays with no fielding errors, while Sean Darnell earned three putouts, three assists and a double play with no errors.
Against Southern Miss, Troy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Darnell hit an RBI double that drove Meier home. Southern Miss answered right back with an RBI single that drove in two runs to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Neither team would score again.
Meier went 2-for-4 with a run, while Jimmy Janicki went 2-for-5 and Schrader went 2-for-4. Chase Nelson took the loss, but struck out six batters and gave up just four hits and two earned runs in six and 2/3 innings pitched. Jay Dill pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out four batters, while giving up no hits or runs. Cavill earned seven putouts with no errors.
Southern Miss will advance to the Sun Belt Championship on Sunday. The NCAA will holds its selection show on ESPN2 on May 26 at 11 a.m. where the regional tournaments, and participants, will be announced.
