Troy remains alive in SBC Tournament with win over Texas State

The Troy Trojans (38-20) kept themselves alive in the second day of the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament in Montgomery on Thursday with a 4-2 win over the Texas State Bobcats.
Troy led 2-2 going into the fifth inning when Texas State added two runs over the next two innings, off solo home runs, to tie things up 2-2 going into the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Troy’s Jakob Wax belted a solo homer of his own to give Tory a 3-2 lead and then Steven Meier scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead for good to 4-2.
No Trojans managed multiple hits in the win but Wax, Gavin Schrader and Darnell each drove in a run. Darnell and Jimmy Janicki hit a double, while Wax hit a homer. Troy earned eight hits as a team.
Noah Thigpen (3-1) earned the win on the mound, striking out three batters and giving up no hits or runs in two and 1/3 innings pitched. Adam Falinski also struck out seven batters and gave up three hits and two earned runs in five and 1/3 innings pitched. Wax tallied three putouts and three assists on defense, while Cavill and Meier had four putouts each with no errors.
Troy will play the loser of Southern Miss vs. Old Dominion in an elimination game on Friday, May 23, at 3 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery.
