Annual Memorial Day Service set for Bicentennial Park

- Jaine Treadwell | The Messenger American legion Post 70 will hold a Memorial Day service Monday at Bicentennial Park at 11 a.m.
American Legion 70 will host its annual Memorial Day Service at Bicentennial Park in Troy on Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m.
At the service, all of the names of Pike County residents that have lost their lives in combat from World War I all the way to Operation Iraqi Freedom will be read aloud. Also, this year’s guest speaker will be Retired Army Lt. Col. John Holladay, who was a distinguished helicopter pilot during three tours of the Vietnam War.
Holladay served 27 years in the Army with three tours during the Vietnam War, 11,500 flight hours and 5,100 hours in active combat. Holladay even flew a HueyCobra like the one that resides at Bicentennial Park in Troy.
Following the war, Holladay served as a general’s aide for two Major Generals and retired in 1990 with two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Stars, 59 Air Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, three Commendation Medals, a Combat Infantry Badge and Master Aviator Wings.
The Memorial Day Service will begin at 11 a.m. in Bicentennial Park in Troy.
