It was a frustrating start to the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament for the third-seed Troy Trojans (37-20) on Wednesday, falling 4-2 to the Old Dominion Monarchs (22-29) in the first round of the double-elimination tournament in Montgomery.

The win marks the fifth straight loss for the Trojans and saw Troy earn just four hits as a team. After trailing 1-0 in the first inning, Troy’s Brooks Bryan hit an RBI single that drove in Blake Cavill and Jakob Wax for the only Trojan lead of the game, going up 2-1. In the fourth inning, ODU added one run to tie things up and then two more in the seventh to secure the win.

Sean Darnell was the only Trojan to collect two hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Colby Frieda (3-2) took the loss on the mound, striking out three batters and giving up four hits and two earned runs in three and 1/3 innings pitched. Garrett Gainous also pitched three innings and fanned a pair of batters, while giving up two hits and two earned runs. Cavill earned eight putouts and two double plays with no fielding errors.

Troy now faces elimination on Thursday, facing off against the loser of Southern Miss vs. Texas State at 9 a.m. Troy was swept by Southern Miss in a three-game series last weekend.
