The Troy Arts Council has been enriching the lives of citizens through the arts for more than 50 years.

TAC President Maggie Hammond spoke to Rotarians about the history of the TAC and what is in store for the near future.

“The Troy Arts Council was formed in 1972,” Hammond said. “We are a cultural and educational non-profit organization with the mission of bringing the arts to Troy, facilitating arts events, local arts events, bringing opportunities for students and teachers in Pike County.”

Hammond said the TAC’s first big event was in 1973 with the Arts and Crafts Show. She said the show eventually became known as the Community Art Show, then the Jean Lake Festival and is currently TroyFest. She said the TAC still volunteers with TroyFest in addition to its own programming.

She said the TAC will have a special exhibit in conjunction with the Johnson Center for the Arts from October to December.

“We’ve also developed an extensive art collection,” Hammond said. “We have a permanent art collection. Pat [Duke] does a lot in bringing in curators, and curating that collection. And we have more than 100 pieces from local artists from over the years, and we’re going to have an exhibition of that art at the Johnson Center from October through the end of the year. So that’ll be something to look forward to.

“We’re going to pull those pieces out, some are in stores, some are at local businesses, or government offices. And so we’re going to have those on display. We’ll have a reception, honor local artists, we’ll have local musicians. So, that’s something to look forward to later this year.”

According to Hammond, the TAC’s next event will be Johnny Barron and the Waterfall Band, which will be a free concert on the square in downtown Troy. The concert will be June 6 at 7 p.m.

Hammond said the TAC is also offering memberships at a 50-percent discount since the year is halfway through. She said the price for the discounted membership is $75 for the remainder of the year. Visit troyartscouncil.net/memberships for more information.
