At the Troy City Schools Board of Education meeting on May 20, the board approved a number of personnel actions along with other business.
One order of business was the reappointment of board member Dr. Jonathan Cellon as board president and Jacquelyn Patterson as board vice-president. The board unanimously approved those reappointments.
The board also approved two out-of-state trips for the Charles Henderson High School varsity basketball team to National Showcases in Gainesville, Fla., on June 19-22 and Atlanta, Ga., on June 26-29. The cost for the trips will be covered by the school’s basketball fund.
The May 20 meeting will also be the last for board member Maxine Hollis, as her five-year term is up and she will not look to be reappointed. Hollis, a Troy University graduate, is the wife of longtime Charles Henderson basketball coach Carl Hollis. She works for the State of Alabama and has been a member of the school board for the past five years.
“I appreciate you being a good teacher and guide for me through all the different dynamics and components of serving on the board,” board member Zach Spann said. “As a fellow community member, I also appreciate you and Pastor Hollis for your service to our community and all of our children.”
Hollis thanked her fellow board members for their time serving together.
“I learned a lot and am very appreciative,” Hollis said. “Like I told someone else, I’ll see what I can do out there in the village to help and support whatever children I can. It’s really been awesome and I will miss each of you and coming here. The sessions we’ve gone through at conferences have been very inspiring to me, for personal growth and just to see what other divisions are going through. I thank you and I thank my councilwoman for giving me the opportunity to come here and serve.”
Troy City Schools Superintendent Cynthia Thomas said Hollis’ passion for the students was evident.
“I echo the sentiments said about (Hollis) and the passion you have for what you did on the board for our students,” Thomas emphasized. “It was very evident you are very passionate about our students and that’s what we look for in a board member. Hats off to you for everything you’ve done for the students in our community.”
The school board also approved a number of out-of-district students, who have also been approved by the various principals in the district. The following personnel actions were approved, as well.
