The federal trial for suspended Brundidge Police Chief Samuel Green has been continued to Oct. 27.
Doug Howard, public affairs officer for the United States District Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama, said Samuel Green’s trial was initially set for August, but was continued until Oct. 27.
Green, along with Sharon Jones Green and Schemillia Levera Fenn, were indicted on March 13 for their roles in an alleged conspiracy to fraudulently receive funds through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
Howard said Sharon Jones Green’s trial was also continued until Oct. 27, but he had no information on a trial date for Schemillia Levera Fenn.
Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson made an announcement March 13 that a federal grand jury in Montgomery had indicted 50-year-old Brundidge Police Chief Green, 53-year-old Sharon Jones Green, and 40-year- Fenn, all from Troy, on federal charges for their alleged roles in a conspiracy to fraudulently receive funds through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
Samuel Green was charged with 13 counts in the indictment, including one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; three counts of money laundering; one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud; six counts of wire fraud; and two counts of aggravated identity theft. The same indictment charges Sharon Green with nine counts, including one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; three counts of money laundering; one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud; three counts of wire fraud; and one count of aggravated identity theft. Fenn is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Samuel Green was initially suspended with pay by the Brundidge City Council after he was indicted. Green did not request a due process hearing and was suspended without pay by the council, pending the outcome of the trial. Brundidge City Manager Willie Wright said no interim police chief had been appointed by the city.
If convicted of all the charges alleged in the indictment, Samuel Green, Sharon Green and Fenn each face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison in addition to significant fines and restitution. Samuel and Sharon Green also face an additional two years for the aggravated identity theft charges that would run consecutive to any other sentence ordered against them.
