The Pike County Bulldogs closed out spring practices last week with a spring game against the Luverne Tigers.

While Pike County ended up losing the spring game by a score of 35-22, the Bulldogs came back from being down 19-0 at one point.

“I thought Luverne was really big and very physical,” PCHS Coach Mark Hurt said. “I thought them being physical – and the things they were doing – was really hard to prepare for in three days. Our offense improved and I think our kids understand we have to get in that weight room and get tougher.”

While the game didn’t go as planned for Pike County, Hurt was proud of the way his team fought back into it.

“I like the way we fought,” he emphasized. “We didn’t win the game but there were some positives to take away from it. We understand that we have to do things a certain way to prepare to play games. We have to be focused and be prepared and mindful of our game plan.”

Pike County is breaking in a new offensive coordinator, Clayton Harris. Harris comes to PCHS after serving at Greenville last season and previously served as head coach at Park Crossing and Sidney Lanier in Montgomery. Hurt and Harris met on the staff at Prattville High School a number of years ago.

“He’s real good at what he’s doing,” Hurt said of Harris. “We’re developing some depth and we focused (in the spring) on the offense a little more, getting that installed. Overall, we know what we need to do in terms of communication. Defensively, we have to find a few people to put in some places there. I’m looking forward to this summer and getting into offseason workouts and in the weight room and getting conditioned. I think we have a good chance to be good.”
