An Aniah’s Law hearing has been set for May 22 for Adrian Moultry Jr., who was charged this week with the murder of a Troy man.

Moultry was charged with the May 3 murder of 20-year-old Nyreesh Amari Smith. On Saturday, May 3, Troy Police officers responded to calls of loud noise and a large crowd at a party on the 100 block of Dunn Circle. When officers arrived, multiple gunshots were fired and officers found Smith on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers performed CPR on Smith until emergency services arrived. Smith was later pronounced deceased despite attempts at life-saving measures. Following an investigation into the shooting, Moultry was arrested on May 13. District Attorney James Tarbox said that an Aniah’s Law hearing would take place regarding the charges on May 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Pike County District Court.

The purpose of Aniah’s Law is to provide judges in Alabama with more authority to deny bail to individuals charged with some of the most serious crimes, including murder.
