On Thursday, May 15, Charles Henderson High School senior athletes Kayla Pearson and Zachary Evans both signed their letters-of-intent to continue their athletic careers in college.
Evans will run track at Ranger College in Texas. Evans broke the CHHS school record in the 300-meter hurdles and is a Top 10 hurdler in school history. He also finished seventh in the state in the 110-meter hurdles at the state track meet this season.
“We only had him here for a small amount of time but in that small time the training and hard work this kid has put in has not only affected him on the track but off the track, as well,” CHHS Track Coach Tyree Reed said. “This wonderful administration and coaching staff not only recognized this but a college coach did, as well.”
That coach that recognized Evans is Ranger College coach De’Torrian Green, a Troy native and Charles Henderson graduate.
“When I talked to Coach Green, ever since I started talking to him, there’s been a connection there and it’s been all love,” Evans said of his decision. “It’s been nothing but good vibes and good energy and I’m just ready to meet the team and get started.”
Evans, who plans to major in the science field, said he was nervous about signing but is excited to get to the next level.
“I just want to excel in my athletic career, finish school and be known and make history,” Evans said. “I’m ready to get to work.”
Pearson will play tennis at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
“She is a remarkable athlete, student and leader,” CHHS Tennis Coach Allie Robbins said of Pearson. “Kayla has led our team as the No. 1 seed, constantly showing strength, focus and competitive spirit on the court. She also excels off the court, ranking in the Top 10 in her graduating class, which is a true testament to her work ethic and determination.”
Pearson said that she and teammate Penny Earnest started a tradition together at CHHS, which will motivate her much further than just her tennis career.
“We started a little tradition where we couldn’t leave practice – or a match – without getting at least one good one,” Pearson recalled. “I will never forget the night after sectionals, my last high school game. We headed straight off the bus and straight onto the court in the dark just to rally, so we could have one last good one.
“That moment was about more than just one good hit. It reminded me that even on my worst days I should never give up until I’m satisfied. That lesson will stay with me far beyond tennis.”
Pearson said she fell in love with Huntingdon after receiving an offer to continue her tennis career.
“I love the campus. When I met the team I immediately fell in love,” she said. “They were all so sweet and loving and it was just awesome. Tennis has been something I’ve played since I was a little girl. It’s been the one constant thing in my life and I wasn’t ready to give it up yet. I worked hard to get an offer.”
Pearson said signing with Huntingdon was a “crazy” moment for her.
“If little me could see me right now she would be insane,” Pearson said with a grin. “She wouldn’t believe it.”
Pearson said she plans to major in biochemistry in college.
“I want to work hard, win a championship, get a 4.0 GPA and do everything the right way,” she said.
