- Troy School of Cosmetology, and members of the Troy cosmetology school gave manicures to members of the Colley Senior Complex Wednesday as a way of personally introducing them to fingernail art.
Catherine Jordan., director of the Colley Senior Complex in Troy, is a rather accomplished juggler.
On Wednesday, there was more activity at the senior complex than bees around honey.
How do Jordan and her s staff manage it all?
“We like it this way,” Jordan said. “When there’s a lot of activity going on, we know that the Colley Senior Complex is providing a beneficial service for the senior adults in our community.”
And, Jordan said, there’s always room for more.
“We plan different activities and events in order to reach out to seniors with different interests,” Jordan said. “We like to stay busy.”

On Wednesday, Katrina Sheffield and members of the staff at Troy School of Cosmetology were busy giving manicures to ladies who wanted to “put a little more color” in their lives and “be in style.”
But, several of the Colley Complex girls laughingly said that “long pretty, colorful fingernails were now in … and housework was out.”
Sheffield said colorful, “decorative” fingernails have long been popular because women want their hands to be attractive.
Red and pink nails are still in vogue but so are long, brightly colored nails. So are long nails and learning to “manage” them is a learning process.
Long manicured nails usually last, perhaps, a couple of weeks,” Sheffield said. “The cost of a manicure can be 50 to 65 dollars. So, you want to take care of your nails. However, if you chip a nail or break one off, there’s the possibility that your manicurist can repair the damaged nail.”
Manicures date back thousands of years to ancient civilizations including the Egyptians.
Sheffield said, if history repeats itself, beautifying nails should continue as reflections of societal trends and cultural influences for a long time.
