Brooks Bryan’s home runs lift No. 14 Troy over Samford

After a Tuesday disappointment against Alabama, the No. 14-ranked Troy Trojans (35-15) rebounded to beat the Samford Bulldogs (24-23) by a score of 12-8 on May 7 in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

Troy held on to a slim 9-8 lead going into the top of the third inning when the Trojans scored three runs to go up 12-8. Samford managed just one run in the bottom of the ninth and Troy held on for its 35th win of the season. 

Brooks Bryan had a big night for Troy, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of home runs, a triple, three RBIs and four runs. He was also walked twice. Blake Cavill went 3-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs and one run. Peyton Watts went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Gavin Schrader and Dillon Kuehl scored two runs each. 

Grady Gorgen (3-0) got the win on the mound, giving up no hits and one earned run in three innings pitched. Grayson Stewart also pitched four innings and struck out three batters, while giving up five hits and three earned runs. Cavill tallied seven putouts and no fielding errors on defense. 

For Samford, Jeffrey Ince went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs. Ince was the only Bulldog to earn multiple hits. Gatlin Pitts also hit a three-run homer and Michael Gupton hit a home run, as well. Heath Clevenger (1-2) took the loss on the mound, striking out one and giving up seven hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched. 

Troy now shifts its focus back to the conference with the final two series of the regular season left. Troy will hit the road to face Arkansas State May 9-11 and then battle Southern Miss May 15-17 to close out the regular season slate. Troy currently sits in third place of the conference behind Southern Miss.
