Zion Chapel shuts out JU Blacksher to earn final region spot in state tournament

The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels (18-15) closed out the Class 2A South Regional Softball Tournament in Gulf Shores with a 11-0 victory over the JU Blacksher Lady Bulldogs in the finals of the elimination bracket on May 6. 

The win earns Zion Chapel the final south region spot in the upcoming Class 2A State Tournament. It’s the second year in the row that the Lady Rebels have earned a spot in the state tournament. Both the region champion and runner-up advance to the state tournament.

After losing to Pike Lib in the region finals, Zion Chapel moved down to the elimination bracket finals. Blacksher defeated GW Long in the elimination bracket semifinals before facing off against ZCHS. 

Zion Chapel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Rebs never trailed in the contest and pitcher Riley Bannin pitched a shortened no-hitter, shutout with two strikeouts in five innings. 

Sydney Boothe went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, three RBIs and one run, while Kaylee Hodge went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run. Aubrey Bassett drove in two runs, while Emily Rhodes, Karli Kidd, Landry Hataway and Bannin drove in one run each. Bannin, KB Holley, Alyssa Forehand, Hataway, Kidd and Rhodes scored one run. Rhodes also tallied four putouts with no errors on defense. 

Both Zion Chapel and Pike Lib will play in the 2A State Tournament in Oxford, beginning on May 12.
