At the May 6 Troy City Council meeting, the new redistricting plan for the city was adopted.

The council heard the second reading of the redistricting plan and unanimously approved it. The council held the first reading of the original redistricting plan on April 8 but due to an error on the map that was discovered, the map was then corrected. A first reading of the corrected map was held on April 22.

Redistricting is required following every census, due to population shifts. The target population for each district in Troy is 3,545. Due to population decreases in District 1, 5 and a small decrease in District 4, some changes needed to made. District 1 and 5 are Troy’s majority-minority districts and remain so after redistricting.

Previously, Troy Mayor Jason Reeves said that mailers would go out to all voters in the city to confirm what district they vote in.

“We will get to work immediately to get everybody what they need, get in touch with the Board of Registrars and get all the information out to let the public know exactly what’s what,” Troy Mayor Jason Reeves said after the adoption of the redistricting plan. “We’ll get started on that immediately.”

Following the meeting, Reeves and the council acknowledge city attorney Dickie Calhoun for reaching 45 years of service with the city on May 1.

“It has been my distinct honor and privilege to serve as the city attorney for all these years,” Calhoun said. “I hope for awhile longer. It’s been a great honor to me and it means a lot to me. So, I thank you very much.”

The next city council meeting will be held on May 27 at 5 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Troy City Hall. A public work session will also be held upstairs at Troy City Hall at 4 p.m.
