Local schools compete in Regional Softball Tournament

The Charles Henderson, Ariton, Pike Liberal Arts and Zion Chapel softball teams were all in action in Gulf Shores on Monday at the South Regional Softball Tournament.

Pike Lib, Zion Chapel and Ariton competed in the Class 2A Regional Softball Tournament, while Charles Henderson battled in the Class 5A Tournament. 

The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans (9-26) led for much of the contest against Elberta in the Class 5A First Round before ultimately losing 7-6. CHHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and took a 3-2 lead going into the fourth. CHHS extended the lead 6-2 going into the bottom of the fifth but Elberta began to chip away at the lead.

Elberta scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Lady Trojan lead to 6-4 and still trailed 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. In the first three batters in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Trojans earned two outs and looked to be on the way to the second round of the winner’s bracket before Elberta scored on a fielding error to cut the lead to 6-5. Elberta then tied things up with an RBI single into right field. In the next at-bat, Elberta secured the win with a walk-off RBI single into right field for the scoring run.

Janazia Cantlow led CHHS at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, while Jada Jones went 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Camille Lewis drove in two runs. Lewis pitched seven innings and gave up seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. CHHS had four fielding errors as a team. 

Charles Henderson will play Headland in the elimination bracket later today. 

The Pike Lady Patriots (18-15) throttled Cottonwood by a score of 15-0, propelled by a 10-run second inning. Sarah Strickland led the Lady Pats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Haylie Brown drove in two runs, scored two runs and stole two bases. Shelly Stephens also drove in a run and scored two runs.

Mary Holland Stephens drove in a run and scored two runs, while also pitching all three innings with one strikeout. She also gave up just two hits and no runs. Madison Nelson drove in three runs and Camryn Brown hit a double and scored two runs. Allie Booth tallied two RBIs and one run for PLAS. 

The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels (16-14) also earned a resounding 11-0 win over Geneva County in the first round. ZCHS led 2-0 going into the fourth inning before scoring nine unanswered runs to win via run-rule. 

Riley Bannin led the way for ZCHS, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Shea Wambles went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI, while Aubrey Bassett drove in two runs and scored two runs. Kaylee Hodge scored two runs and Landry Hataway scored three runs. Sydney Boothe pitched all five innings and mowed down 10 batters, while giving up one hit and no runs. 

The Ariton Lady Purple Cats (27-19-2) fell by a score of 6-2 to Washington County in the first round. Macileigh Bragg went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Beth Dixon drove in one run and scored one run. Molly Snell also scored a run. Dixon pitched three innings and fanned three batters, while giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Madolyn Hudson pitched four innings and gave up two hits and no earned runs along with striking out a pair of batters.

Ariton will play Cottonwood in the elimination bracket later today. Pike Lib and Zion Chapel now move into the semifinals of the winners bracket. Zion Chapel plays JU Blacker in the semifinals later today, while Pike Lib plays Washington County.
