The No. 15-ranked Troy Trojans (32-13) got the week started off well with a dominant 12-2 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (26-19) in just seven innings of a non-conference game on Tuesday.
The Trojans led handedly 7-2 going into the seventh before exploding to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh leading to the game being called. It was Troy’s seventh run-rule win of the year and avenges an 11-1 loss to Jax State via run-rule back on March 11.
“(Dillon Kuehl) certainly opened the door with the swing on Scarborough on that 97-98 (mile-per-hour), however hard the ball was. We just did a lot of good things,” Troy Coach Skylar Meade said. “Our base-running – we had heads up base-running. Both literally, head up, seeing if I’m being sent or not, and then the Steve steal play was really cool. Something he’s capable of doing that maybe other people can’t.”
Jimmy Janicki led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs, while Houston Markham went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Steven Meier went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Sean Darnell also drove in two runs, while Dillon Kuehl hit a two-run home run. Troy’s base-runners also stole three bases as a team.
Colby Frieda (3-0) earned his third win on the mound, striking out four batters and giving up four hits and two earned runs in two and 2/3 innings pitched. Jacob Roettgen also struck out four and gave up four hits and no earned runs in three innings on the mound. Blake Cavill tallied six putouts, two assists and a double play with no errors. Peyton Watts also totaled two putouts, two assists and a double play with no errors.
Troy returns to conference play May 2-4 on the road against rival South Alabama.
