- The new redistricted map for Troy.
At the Troy City Council Meeting on April 22, the council heard the first reading of a corrected version of the city’s Redistricting Plan.
Redistricting is required after every census, due to population shifts in districts. The target population for each district is 3,545. Originally, the council heard the first reading of the redistricting plan at the April 8 meeting, but subsequently it was discovered a portion of the map was incorrect.
Originally, the redistricted map had District 5 taking more of District 4’s census block than intended. After the correction was made, District 5 needed to gain more population to reach the target population. As a result, it will take a small portion of District 3. Districts 1 and 5 remain majority minority districts in this plan.
A second reading of the proposed redistricting plan will be held at a special called meeting on May 6 followed by a public hearing and a vote on the plan.
In other business, the council approved the results from the city’s Municipal Water Pollution Prevention (MWPP) Program Report. The report looks at the city’s wastewater system and grades on multiple factors. The lower the score, the better. Troy received a score of nine out of a possible 784 and the report found no issues.
Also, the council approved a bid for a water main extension under U.S. Highway 29/North Three Notch Street to provide sufficient fire protection for Troy First Methodist Church and Troy Bank and Trust. The low bid came from SA Graham at the cost of $250,695.68.
The council also approved a resolution to reject and negotiate a bid for a Wildlife Protection Fence at Troy Municipal Airport. The city received just one bid for the project, which exceeded its estimated budget. The resolution allows the city to negotiate with the lone bidder in an attempt to come to an agreement. If a resolution is not reached, the city can then negotiate for work through informal bids to get within – or closer – to the budgeted amount.
The Council will hold a special called meeting on May 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Troy City Hall.
